I was born on Oahu. My grandmother's roots run deep on Maui. The island has always been in me. It was never just a feeling. It was home. It was ancestry. It was something that never left even when I did.

then all at once.
the green was the first thing she noticed.
wild and alive and asking nothing of her
except that she noticed it.
